Alaskans Come Together to Save Lives at Nuvision’s Annual Asher Banks Memorial Blood Drive

According to the Blood Bank of Alaska, only 2% of Alaskans donate blood annually, while a staggering 1 in 3 Alaskans will need a blood donation in their lifetime.

On October 9th, our team at Nuvision Credit Union teamed up with the Blood Bank of Alaska for our 4th Annual Asher Banks Memorial Blood Drive. It was amazing to see so many members, employees, and neighbors across the state show up to honor Asher and help save lives.

We had close to 40 donors turn out in Anchorage alone, plus dozens more giving blood at regional centers in Fairbanks, Juneau, the Kenai Peninsula, and Mat-Su Valley. All together, these donations could help up to 150 patients—people fighting cancer, recovering from serious accidents, or facing medical emergencies right here in Alaska.

While we’re proud of those numbers, this event is about so much more than statistics. It’s a chance for us to pause, remember Asher Banks, celebrate his incredible courage, and keep making a positive impact in his name.

Remembering Asher Banks and Continuing His Legacy

We started our annual blood drive back in 2020, and in 2023, we dedicated it to Asher—a brave 3-year-old boy who fought leukemia. During his fight, Asher showed unbelievable strength, and his story continues to inspire people all across Alaska.

At his memorial service, Asher’s parents asked family and friends to honor him by donating blood to help other families facing cancer. We’ve been proud to carry that wish forward ever since.

The need here is huge. The Blood Bank of Alaska points out that only about 2% of Alaskans donate blood each year, even though it’s crucial for cancer treatments, trauma care, and emergency surgery. Every single person who rolls up a sleeve makes a real difference.

Every Donor Has a Story, and Every Donation Matters

For Amy Tullos, our VP of Branches, connecting with donors—especially first-timers—is always the highlight of the drive.

“So many of our fellow Alaskans need blood, and this is our opportunity to answer the call. Meeting first-time donors and hearing why they chose to come out is my favorite part," Amy said. "Everyone has a story, someone they're honoring, or a reason that inspired them to give. It’s a powerful reminder of what a simple act of kindness can do."

She added, "I’m so grateful Asher’s legacy keeps highlighting the need for blood donations in Alaska. His story still moves people to step up."

Whether people came in memory of a loved one, because blood donations saved someone they know, or just to help out a neighbor, that generosity gives families facing tough times something priceless: hope.

A Huge Thank You

We want to give a massive thank-you to the Blood Bank of Alaska, our awesome Nuvision volunteers, our members, and everyone across the state who donated or shared our posts.

As Amy put it, "Every effort matters, and every donation can truly change a life."

We’re already looking forward to keeping this tradition going next year to honor Asher and support more local families.
