According to the FDA, every two seconds a patient somewhere requires blood. Sadly, COVID-19 has brought blood donations to a screeching halt, shutting down blood drives and keeping regular donors at home. Now, more than ever, the need is high.

At Nuvision, we are always looking for ways to help our community. During the COVID-19 crisis, we’ve helped keep 14 restaurants stay in business, provide medical workers with meals, and stock food pantries for those in need. Now, we’re hosting blood drives across each of the regions we serve to help our community stay healthy.

Why donate blood?

Blood donations help people with a variety of medical problems, from emergency trauma cases to surgery and cancer patients. It’s estimated that 4.5 million Americans need blood transfusions each year. Without blood donors, these patients wouldn’t have access to life-saving treatment.

It only takes a few people to step up and give to make a huge difference. If you’re on the fence about donating, here are a few reasons you should:

  • It’s quick and convenient. – The entire process only takes an hour—a small price to pay to give the gift of life. Not only is it quick, but appointments can also be scheduled ahead of time.
  • One person’s donation can save up to four lives. – Blood donations can be separated into four parts: plasma, platelets, red cells, and whole blood. Each part can be used to treat a different kind of illness or injury.
  • Less than 10% of the population eligible to give blood does. – With so few donors, there is always a need.
  • It’s beneficial to your own health. - Regularly donating blood has been known to reduce harmful iron stores, decrease the risk of cancer, and increase cardiovascular health.

Donating is safe and easy. If you’re a healthy individual over 16 years of age and weighing at least 110 lbs, you are eligible. All you have to do is register online to reserve your appointment time. When you show up, be sure to bring a photo ID. All blood donations will also be tested for COVID-19 antibodies.
