Nuvision’s mission to help kids get an education and financial freedom

Almost everybody agrees education is important for children. It not only helps develop thinking skills and prepares kids to for their future careers and lives, but it also builds their ability to tackle real-world problems that will pop up on the job and in day-to-day activities.

However, not all children have access to everything they need to do well. Whether it’s due to personal circumstances or limitations of the school they attend, many of our kids are lacking in some aspect of their learning. Students without proper supplies may feel discouraged, and schools without adequate resources have a harder time providing a good education for their students.

Studies have shown how crucial early learning is. A child’s ability to read and understand content in third grade is a reliable predictor of whether they will graduate or go on to lead a successful career.

We also want our members to be successful in their lives, and we know that teaching these skills starts early. The learning habits we begin during childhood and teen years affect us through the rest of our lives, so it’s important to remember to help those just starting out.

How we’re promoting student success

Nuvision is always looking for ways to help and ensure students have access to the tools required to succeed. Two of our most recent outreaches occurred over the last summer.

In June, we delivered 40 Texas Instrument Scientific calculators to Mr. Barton’s Business Fundamentals class at La Quinta High in Garden Grove. Mr. Barton had almost given up after putting the request on Donor Choose and receiving no response for months. When we showed up with the calculators, he was thrilled.

Just this month, we participated in the CHOCK walk at Disneyland resort, an annual event hosted to raise funds for health care, education, and research programs for kids in the area. In total, 60 Nuvision team members came and raised $6,350 for the well-being of Southern California kids!

Of course, tackling big goals like this takes many more than any one person or group can do. That’s why, in addition to our own projects, we’ve been sharing groups helping support military kids in school, promote childhood literacy, and offering opportunities for students throughout this month.          

The pathway to financial freedom

A good education is the first step towards that financial freedom. Nuvision is committed to making sure every kid not only gets an education, but also gets a sound financial education.

Two-thirds of Americans can’t pass a basic test on financial literacy. Most schools don’t even require a finance course, even though the teen years are such a crucial time for building money habits.

Like language literacy, financial literacy is best taught young. When students aren’t exposed to these principles in high school, they have a much harder time maintaining budgets in college and life beyond.

That’s why we’ve hosted an essay challenge that provides students with college scholarships while educating them on the basics of finances.

This program rewarded over $50,000 in scholarships and funds to help schools teach financial literacy and brought financial education to more than a dozen Southern California schools.
