What Permanent Fund Dividend (PFD) Season Really Looks Like Around Here
By the time PFD season rolls around, most people already know what it’s going toward.
It’s not a question of “what should we do with it?” It’s “what needs to get handled first?”
That’s the reality you see when you’re close to families, schools, and community groups across Alaska.
That’s the part we see up close.
We see it during programs like Shop with a Cop, where kids who’ve had a difficult year spend time with officers in a very different setting — one focused on support, dignity, and letting kids just be kids for a moment. The gifts matter, but what often matters more is how those kids feel walking out: noticed, supported, and not forgotten.
We see it through partnerships like Anchorage Cops for Community and the Clothesline Project. In Alaska, winter doesn’t wait. Boots, socks, and warm clothing aren’t extras — they’re necessities. When kids have what they need before the cold really sets in, it changes how they show up at school and how manageable the season feels for their families.
And we see it in Nuvision Heroes like Sean Keating of the Anchorage Police Department.
Sean has served Anchorage for more than twenty years, responding to everything from everyday calls to life-threatening emergencies. Over that time, he’s earned multiple Life Saving Awards and taken on the responsibility of mentoring new officers as a Field Training Officer. Outside of patrol work, he’s also led efforts like the Anchorage Police Department’s Angel Tree program, helping provide gifts to children experiencing homelessness — work that’s grown year after year because the need is real.
That’s Alaska spirit in action. Showing up. Carrying weight for others. Doing the work without expecting attention.
We see that same mindset in organizations like Operation Children First in Soldotna, where Matt Brown has spent years helping kids and families who are slipping through the cracks. Matt doesn’t describe what he does as charity. He talks about it as responsibility — seeing a need in his own community and refusing to look away.
At Nuvision, our role isn’t to replace that work or take credit for it. It’s to stand alongside it. To support the people and organizations already doing the hard, local, day-to-day work that strengthens families and communities across Alaska.
PFD season is personal. Everyone uses it differently, and there’s no one right approach. For some, it’s about stability at home. For others, it’s preparing for winter or handling a long-overdue expense. And for some, it’s choosing — even in a small way — to help someone else.
However it shows up for you this year, it reflects a simple truth across Alaska: community isn’t a slogan. It’s people showing up for each other.
