Nuvision Heroes: Honoring Veterans Who Continue to Serve

This Veterans Day, we’re honoring those who never stopped serving — the men and women who carried their dedication to country into their daily lives and communities. Veterans remind us that service doesn’t end with a uniform. It lives on through mentorship, volunteerism, and acts of kindness that strengthen the places we call home.
One of those heroes is Nick Saifan Jr., a Navy and Army veteran who has spent nearly 40 years serving his country and community. Nick was nominated by our friends at Newport Harbor American Legion Post 291, where he continues to make a difference every day.
A Life of Service and Sacrifice
Nick first joined the military at 18, looking for independence and a sense of direction. “I wanted to leave the house and find something secure,” he said. “I wasn’t really into college right away, so the military gave me that opportunity.”
He began his journey in the U.S. Navy as a gunner’s mate, later transitioning to the U.S. Army, where he rose through the ranks from Staff Sergeant to Captain over the course of 24 years. His military career took him from times of peace to years of conflict, where he witnessed both the camaraderie and the cost of service. “The military taught me discipline, independence, and how to live a clean life,” Nick reflected. “But those final 15 years were tough. It was all about war.”
Despite the challenges, Nick says the experience made him more humble and grateful — and inspired him to continue serving after retirement. “I’m just thankful to be alive and to see my kids grow up healthy. Now I’m happier doing what I do — serving veterans.”
Continuing the Mission
Since retiring, Nick has dedicated himself to helping other veterans find stability, purpose, and a sense of belonging. As chairman of the nonprofit Patriots Promise, he works to provide affordable housing, financial aid, and critical support for veterans in need.
“Our mission is to fill the gaps the government can’t always cover,” Nick explained. “We’re not just paying rent — we want to become landlords, so we can offer stable housing to veterans who have vouchers or need a lift up. We help them transition, train, furnish their homes — whatever it takes.”
Patriots Promise also partners with other veteran-focused nonprofits like the Veterans Legal Institute and Help, providing funding and resources to keep their missions going. Beyond housing, Nick stays deeply connected through community groups, coffee meetups, and mentoring fellow veterans. “It’s all about staying together,” he said. “When you spend 20-plus years in the military, those bonds don’t fade. You need that brotherhood.”
A Message for the Next Generation
Nick believes service should be part of every young person’s journey. “Everyone should serve at least two years before college,” he said. “It teaches discipline and gives you a foundation for life.” For those unsure about their path, he encourages exploring the military as a stepping stone toward education and a sense of purpose. “Take advantage of the benefits — the education, the training — it’s all there if you want to build a better future.”
Honoring Veterans Like Nick
When asked what he wishes more people understood about veterans, Nick shared a simple message: “We love the community. We want to be part of it. Veterans didn’t just serve the country — we serve the people. We’re your neighbors, your coworkers, your friends.”
