Nuvision Heroes: Honoring Trevor McLean, Anchorage Firefighter/EMT
What inspires someone to dedicate their life to saving others? For Trevor McLean, it was a combination of timing, personal experience, and a drive to make a difference. After serving as a Navy Corpsman, Trevor found his calling in firefighting and rescue work. Now, as a Firefighter/EMT with the Anchorage Fire Department, Trevor brings his passion for service to Alaska. We’re proud to feature him as part of our Nuvision Heroes series for National First Responders Day.
Trevor’s decision to join the Navy wasn’t born out of certainty, but rather a desire to avoid complacency. “A lot of people I worked with in high school kept saying, ‘One day I’ll do something,’ and my biggest fear was ending up in that situation,” Trevor shared. His five years as a Hospital Corpsman gave him the skills and experience that would ultimately shape his future in firefighting. “The Navy taught me leadership and how to keep things running smoothly—those are lessons I carry with me every day.”
After his time in the Navy, Trevor and his wife decided to move to Alaska. They were drawn to the state’s unique landscape and community. “We fell in love with the area during our trips and knew this was where we wanted to start our next chapter,” he said. Since arriving in 2021, Trevor has worn many hats, including firefighter roles in Palmer and with the Mat-Su Water Rescue Team, before joining the Anchorage Fire Department.
One of the most rewarding aspects of Trevor’s work is being there for people on their worst days. He shared a deeply personal motivation behind his commitment: “My brother was involved in a fatal motorcycle accident, and the fire department in New Jersey was incredible—they gave us time, care, and support. That’s why I push myself to be the best I can be in this role. I want to give other families the same care that my family received.”
Trevor has faced challenging calls throughout his career, but one in particular stands out. "We were called out to a structure fire just around the corner from our station. It was chaotic—the fire was blazing, and we knew someone was still trapped inside. My captain and senior firefighter made it into the building while I worked to cool the fire down. We were able to rescue the person, and while they didn’t survive for long after, we gave their family those precious extra days to say goodbye. That’s why I do this.”
In both his firefighting role and as a Fire Protection Specialist with the Alaska Air National Guard, Trevor is driven by a strong sense of teamwork and respect. “None of this is possible without the team. The respect we have for each other, and for the community, is everything. It’s what keeps us going.” That commitment to teamwork extends into his personal life, where his family is involved in the fire community. "We make time to include our families, having dinners together at the station and keeping them part of the life we lead as firefighters.”
Looking ahead, Trevor is focused on continuing to grow in his career. “Right now, I’m just focused on learning everything I can, becoming the best firefighter possible. Every station is a little different, and I want to understand all the tools, tactics, and community needs.” Trevor’s dedication to his work and his team shines through, making him not just a firefighter, but a true leader in the making.
Trevor McLean’s story is a reminder that real heroes don’t just show up—they push themselves to be better, to give more, and to make a difference wherever they can. His work, both on the frontlines and in the community, is making Alaska a safer place for all of us.
