The Power of Three: A Shared Commitment and Values
Born nearly a century ago as the credit union for Douglas Aircraft, Nuvision Credit Union’s values were forged in the factories and plants that made the Southwest prosper. A Look at Cheyenne, Wyoming
“It’s a city that sprang into existence in a night, in obedience to the waving of a magician’s wand over a patch of wild buffalo grass. The magician was American enterprise; this wand resembled a bar of railroad iron a thousand miles long.” - the Chicago Times on November 15, 1867
Situated along the western edge of the Great Plains, the frontier town of Cheyenne, Wyoming, is a city strongly rooted in its past, continuing its long-standing legacy of hard work and perseverance to this day.
From its expeditious beginnings to its modern-day charm, Cheyenne shines because of the determined spirits of the people that built it, and the people who continue to make it great.
Cheyenne: A History of Hard Working
People tasked with finding a railroad route through the Laramie Mountains, U.S. Army Major General Grenville M. Dodge established the town of Cheyenne as headquarters for railway workers in the region, giving it the unique title of the first town in the country created by the railroad. Cheyenne was founded in 1867 and started small—just a few hundred residents camping in tents alongside Crow Creek—but soon became a beacon to merchants, businessman, and laborers looking to profit from the construction of the railroad.
As a town that grew out of necessity, the people who settled there were there to work, and their tireless efforts contributed to the city’s rapid growth. Within six months, the town had 4,000 residents, 300 businesses in operation, and had established a city charter. This drastic transformation gave the city originally known as “The City of Tents” a new nickname, “The Magic City of the Plains.”
U.S. army base Fort D. A. Russell—today a major air force base—was built to protect the construction workers organizing the railroad. Nicknamed by General Dodge as the gambling center of the world, early Cheyenne was the epitome of a Wild West town—rough-and-tumble, crime-ridden, and rowdy. Although laws and government existed, they were mostly ineffective, frequently leaving vigilantes to do the work of courts.
In the early 1880, successful cattle ranches, sheep ranches, and the Black Hills Gold Rush continued the city’s growth, making Cheyenne one of the richest city per capita in the country and attracting some of the Old West’s most famous characters, including Wyatt Earp, Calamity Jane, and Tom Horn. By 1890, the city’s population had risen to 10,000, Wyoming had become an official state, and Cheyenne was declared its capital.
Despite its appreciation for the past, Cheyenne has had many firsts and has pioneered numerous new ideas, setting precedents for the country to follow. The city was the first to have a county library system, one of the first cities in the U.S. to be lit with incandescent street lights, and the first to hold a nighttime football game under artificial light.
Cheyenne Today
With an approximate population of 64,000, Cheyenne is the most populated city in Wyoming today. The community is friendly, passionate, and takes pride in their history. Every year, they host the “Daddy of ‘em all,” also known as Cheyenne Frontier Days, the largest outdoor rodeo and Western event in the world. The ten-day long festival includes parades, western art shows, carnivals, and pancake breakfasts.
Cheyenne’s community also has deep military roots, with the U.S. Air Force as the leading industry and employer for residents of Cheyenne. Fort D. A. Russell—the military base established at the town’s founding—was renamed F.E. Warren Air Force Base after Wyoming’s first governor and is the Air Force’s oldest continuously active military installation. For the people of Cheyenne, the base is a testament to the community’s patriotism and long-standing commitment to serving our country.
