Celebrating Navy Veteran John Amundson: A Nuvision Hero

As we prepare to honor Memorial Day, Nuvision Credit Union is honored to spotlight John Amundson as one of our Nuvision Heroes. A proud Nuvision member since 1986 and a resident of Fountain Valley, California, John embodies the spirit of service and sacrifice through his commendable actions during the Vietnam War and his ongoing dedication to veteran affairs.

John enlisted in the Navy at a pivotal time during the Vietnam War, inspired by a family tradition of military service that spans generations. His decision to join was driven by a blend of necessity and a deep-seated respect for his father and grandfather's military histories. Serving in Yokosuka, Japan, he not only fulfilled his duties but also faced life-changing experiences that shaped his character and future.

After completing boot camp in Great Lakes, Illinois, and supply school in Newport, Rhode Island, John was stationed in Yokosuka, Japan. His tour in Japan was not just a military assignment; it turned into a life-defining chapter. Amidst his service, John married his fiancée and brought her to Japan, where they lived in traditional Japanese housing, complete with tatami mats and sliding paper doors. It was here that John's life took a dramatic turn during the Pueblo crisis when he was recalled from his honeymoon to rejoin his ship, which was pursuing the captured USS Pueblo.

Reflecting on his experiences, John shared significant insights into the personal growth and challenges he faced during and after his service. He explained how the military helped him overcome his shyness, transforming him into a more confident and assertive individual. "I was kind of a shy guy when I went in, and I think I came out of that shell a lot," he remarked.

Transitioning back to civilian life was not without its challenges. Upon his return, the climate of protest against the Vietnam War meant that veterans like John could not wear their uniforms in public without facing hostility. This period required John to discreetly navigate his identity as a veteran, especially as he pursued further education at Cal State Fullerton.

Today, John is an active member of the American Legion and regularly attends Nuvision's military and veteran events, including the Veterans Day appreciation breakfasts. These gatherings are not just social events for John; they reaffirm his and others' sacrifices. "It's meaningful to me because I see some guys that didn't come back as well as I did," he shared, acknowledging the deep bonds and mutual respect within the veteran community.

John's story is a powerful reminder of the complexities of military service and the enduring strength of those who serve. As we approach Memorial Day, his story underscores the importance of honoring and understanding the personal histories of our veterans and those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms.
