Read an excerpt of Alyssa's essay:
There is a growing fear that social media makes every person feel as if the world needs to know the minutia about his or her life, experiences, and viewpoints; the online world seems to transform a normal person into a celebrity with their own reality show. However, while it seemingly makes people more self-centered, it can also bring awareness to the needs of people around the globe. Because information is easily spread and shared, important messages can be sent to a wide audience spanning the entire globe. The Nerdfighter audience of John and Hank Green have continually come together to support various charities such as Water.org, the This Star Won't Go Out campaign, and have lent over $500,000 to entrepreneurs in developing countries on Kiva. Social media has the ability to take hold of a message and pass it on to millions of people. Recently, social media helped make people aware of the political situation in Serbia. Due to its capacity to disseminate information, social media has changed the world into a place of more aware individuals.
